David Wallace
David Wallace was a White American businessman and investor from a Pasadena family with generational wealth. He took over his family’s investment firm, Wallace Capital Management, after his father. David was married to attorney Katherine Wallace, and their only child was Jeremy Wallace. After Jeremy’s June 1998 mental health crisis, cardiac arrest, and acquired brain injury, David began learning to support his son through presence as well as material provision.
Early Life and Background
David was raised within the Wallace family’s wealth and attended private schools and country clubs. His grandfather founded Wallace Capital Management in 1952, and David’s father later expanded the firm.
Career
David took over Wallace Capital Management in 1990. His position rested partly on inherited wealth and family connections, but he also established a reputation as a capable businessman and investor.
Personality
David was confident, decisive, energetic, and accustomed to addressing problems through action and financial resources. He expressed love largely by providing high-quality material support. This approach left him slow to recognize the isolation and pressure Jeremy experienced despite the family’s wealth.
David’s undiagnosed ADHD contributed to intense focus, rapid idea generation, restlessness, and a preference for action. Wealth and professional support reduced the visible consequences of his executive-function difficulties, so the condition remained unrecognized.
Cultural Identity and Heritage
David was White American and grew up within Pasadena’s culture of generational wealth. Private education, country clubs, inherited business connections, and ready access to money shaped what he considered ordinary. He did not initially recognize how strongly those advantages influenced his expectations and choices.
Physical Characteristics
David had dark hair, a strong jawline, a prominent nose, and a tall, lean build. Jeremy closely resembled him in each of those features, and other people frequently commented on the resemblance.
Family and Core Relationships
Katherine Wallace
David was married to Katherine Wallace, an attorney who had reached partnership at her firm. Katherine was more conscious than David of the family’s excess and challenged assumptions he treated as normal. During Jeremy’s recovery, she also recognized when David’s attempts to find solutions became counterproductive and redirected him toward being present.

David and Katherine’s only child, Jeremy, grew up with extensive material support. David loved him deeply but was often away for business and relied on provision as his primary form of care.
On June 17, 1998, Jeremy was found unresponsive at home after a rapid mental health and eating-disorder crisis. Severe malnutrition and dehydration caused cardiac arrest, and the resulting oxygen deprivation caused a brain injury and post-anoxic epilepsy. The crisis confronted David with circumstances that money and professional connections could not reverse.
During Jeremy’s first documented seizure aura on September 8, David could not stop his son’s pain and had to remain nearby without trying to control the episode. Over the following months, he began learning that presence could be meaningful even when he could not provide a solution.
Later in 1998, wealthy Pasadena parents suggested that Jeremy should attend a school for students with special needs. David and Katherine rejected the exclusion and defended Jeremy’s right to remain with his peers. David described his son as perfect exactly as he was.
